Hello friends! This month, instead of a new post, I wanted to let you know that The Sexual Evolution is now out in Germany! And check out the cover – what a beauty!

Yes, the book is titled “Diversity” in German. For the subtitle, I think the best translation is: “The biological basis of variation in sex, gender, and gender identity.” And that’s a great title. German speakers, please comment and tell me how I did!

It’s always interesting to me how books are titled in other languages. Some of you may remember my shock when the French Translation of Human Errors arrived on my doorstep and I had to use Google Translate to discover they had titled the book, Sperm Always Turn Right: and other oddities of the human body.

I’m also pleased to report that the first two reviews from Germany were very positive. The first one is from the National Public Broadcasting channel, Deutschlandfunk. Michael Lange said, “Nathan Lents fills a knowledge gap, not with buzzwords and ideology, but with science.” Listen here for the full review.

And the second review is even more satisfying, as it comes from Mission, the online magazine of the Evangelical Mission Worldwide, a community of Protestant churches, organizations, and associations involved in mission and ecumenism. Matt Barlow says:

“At a time when powerful political forces are trying to return to simplistic and binary views of human sexuality and gender, his work is a welcome addition, showing that reality is always much more complex and beautiful than political actors would like it to be.”

Anyway, not only am I excited for German book launch, but also to announce that I will be doing an author presentation and discussion in Berlin on Thursday, September 18!

You can use this link to register for the event, and if you know anyone that lives in Berlin, please share this with them!

25 years after my first visit there, I eagerly look forward to my return to Berlin to promote my book and to pay homage to the life and legacy of Magnus Hirschfeld. Before the Nazis’ devastating attempt to erase it all, Berlin was the world epicenter of sexual liberation and the scientific study of gender and sexuality. Hirschfeld and others made so much progress through the 1920s until the Nazis came to power in 1933 and destroyed so much of that knowledge and progress.

Almost a hundred years later, knowledge and progress are once again under attack by the forces of fear, hate, and fascism.

Wishing you all a restful end to your summer. -NHL
